Witches Love Monsters

After seeing Oops I Summoned a Demonic Merman about half a jillion times on my Instagram ‘for you page’, I finally caved and went searching for it on KU. As it turns out, the demon merman was book three in a four-book mini collab series featuring authors Regine Abel (Prime Mating Agency), Opal Reyne (Duskwalker Brides), Naomi Lucas (Naga Brides), and Tiffany Roberts (The Spider’s Mate). While each operates as a standalone, they’re all novellas, ranging from roughly 125 pages to 250 pages. So, I figured, why not just read them all?

Long story short, the series itself is fine. If you’re looking for a set of quick romps that do not require much critical thinking and have minimal to no plot, this is okay. The writing for the first book (Oops I Summoned a Liderc) was clunky, and the characters were rather boring. I was pretty disappointed in the underwhelming storyline and lack of interesting spice in the Oops I Summoned a Demonic Merman. Oops I Summoned a Night Demon was alright. At the risk of sounding nit-picky, while the other two seemed to lack engaging details, this one felt like there was a lot of fluff that unnecessarily drew out the story.

The only one I truly enjoyed was the second book – Oops I Summoned a Metamorphic Monster. I liked the plot progression, the bit of world building without overextending the bounds of the novella, and the spice was decently written. I also just liked the main characters more than the rest in the series.

Overall, if you were to ask for my recommendation, I would say you could read book two (Metamorphic Monster) and four (Night Demon) and leave the other two. But that’s just my opinion.
